United Group’s Renewable Energy Investment in Bulgaria

United Group is investing in three solar plants and one wind farm, with a combined energy generation capacity of 124 MW. The company’s goal is not only to power its own operations but also to contribute to the broader energy transition in the region.

The solar projects are strategically located in various parts of Bulgaria, while the wind farm will be situated along the Black Sea coast. These initiatives align with United Group’s long-term sustainability vision, which is focused on harnessing renewable sources to reduce its carbon footprint and enhance energy security.

Breakdown of United Group’s Renewable Energy Projects

Solar Power Plants

The first of the solar plants, located near Stara Zagora, began operations in September 2024. This plant has a modest capacity of 3 MW and is expected to produce 4.3 MWh annually.

Two additional solar plants are currently under development near Kyustendil and Vidin. The Vidin facility, in particular, is set to be the largest solar project in the group’s portfolio, with an expected annual production capacity of 57 GWh.

Kremena Onshore Wind Farm

In addition to the solar projects, United Group is also developing the Kremena Onshore Wind Farm in northeastern Bulgaria. This wind farm will feature 15 turbines, taking advantage of Bulgaria’s favorable wind conditions along the Black Sea.

Strategic Impact of Renewable Energy on United Group’s Operations

Once completed, these renewable energy projects are expected to supply 160% of the electricity required for United Group’s Bulgarian operations. By 2027, the projects will meet 65% of the group’s total electricity consumption across its regional operations. This not only boosts the company’s sustainability credentials but also reduces its reliance on non-renewable energy sources.

Integrating Battery Storage for Greater Efficiency

To enhance energy storage and ensure a reliable power supply, all four renewable energy projects will be integrated with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The BESS will have the capacity to store 1.5 times the peak energy production, allowing United Group to manage energy supply efficiently, even during periods of low production.

United Group’s Vision for a Sustainable Future

Victoriya Boklag, CEO of United Group, expressed the company’s enthusiasm for this new direction. She said, “By harnessing the power of the sun and wind, we’re not just powering our operations; we’re powering change. United Group is proud to lead the way in producing green electricity.” This statement highlights the company’s dedication to renewable energy and its broader goals of fostering sustainability in the telecommunications sector.
